While promoting her upcoming film, Honey Girls, the iconic R&B singer Ashanti shared how her DMs are flooded with blue checks, and said that some of the messages have amounted to new songs.
While joining Black America Web on Tuesday, Ashanti shared the type of madness that occurs in her social media DMs at any given moment.
“Baby!… Listen,” Ashanti said with a laugh. “It’s a sea of blue checks. It’s a sea of not blue checks. Nah, but it’s kinda crazy. It’s definitely a party going on in my DMs.”
While she says her DMs are usually full, Ashanti also explained that she tries to respond to them, even if it’s much later on.
“Sometimes it’s late, sometimes it’s a little late and it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe a year ago!’ ‘Cause I wasn’t a huge DMer,” she explained. “I would every so often, but there are some really important ones that I answered and they turned into records.”
One of the records that was inadvertently created because of a friendly DM was Moneybagg Yo’s smash hit “Wockesha.” Bagg’s song samples Ashanti’s “Foolish.”
“There was a DM, yeah, like a mutual that put that together, then I got the phone call from Moneybagg and we worked it all out,” Ashanti said about how the sample was cleared for the track. The singer later hopped on the track’s remix with Lil Wayne.
Ashanti isn’t the only artist who nearly missed out on collaboration opportunities because of their overpopulated DMs. Just a few months ago, T-Pain made headlines when he learned about Instagram’s message request folder.
“I was today years old when I found out about the request folder on instagram that’s full of celebs trying to reach me,” he said in a TikTok video. “I’ve been accidentally straight up ignoring all these people for like 2 years. I thought DM’s are supposed to just show up in the normal folder and you don’t have to go digging for all these.”
