Best New Music This Week: Pharrell, Kid Cudi, SZA

Summer is finally heating up and so are the new music releases. This week, Kid Cudi returned a new track from Entergalactic, called “Do I What I Want.” Pharrell tapped 21 Savage and Tyler, the Creator for his hard-hitting collaboration “Cash In Cash Out.” And SZA dropped added seven songs to the deluxe version of CRTL on the album’s five-year anniversary. This week’s list also includes songs from 6LACK, Saucy Santana, Fana Hues, and more.

“Do What I Want” is a moody and melodic track from Kid Cudi, who makes use of a hypnotic flow as he sings and raps about living his life freely. “Feel like writin’ a movie, yeah, that shit would be groovy/ Anything that I want, anything that will move me/ Next step, I’m on my shit and I’m livin’ with love,” he raps on the second verse. “Do What I Want” was first teased in April 2020 on Cudi’s Instagram Live, but is now being released as a part of his upcoming project Entergalactic, which will be accompanied by his animated Netflix series of the same name.

“Cash In Cash Out” begins with a head-knocking beat, courtesy of Pharrell, and a dizzying chorus from 21 Savage. “Cash in, cash out, cash in, cash out,” Savage says repeatedly before erupting in a hard-hitting verse and rapping about his material wealth and luxurious lifestyle. “Slaughter gang, nigga, I’m reppin’/ Chopper get to preachin’, I’m the reverend,” he spits. Tyler, the Creator slows his flow down a bit, delivering raspy vocals as he raps, “Any stone I’m in, no less than six digits/ Beep go the Rolls, right-side, I sit in/ Tick go the watch, it came with a dent in it.” Make sure to check out the animated music video here.

Fana Hues, “Drive”

“Drive” is a soulful and groovy track in which Fana Hues slides on the beat as she sings about an intimate moment while cruising the highway. “Forty-five on the east side/ Something ‘bout them curvеs ease my mind/ Sunset sugar, ooh that’s my dеlight/ For the night,” she sings with a soothing voice. “Drive” is the first single from Pigeons and Planes’ first album, See You Next Year. SZA, “Awkward”

SZA is back. Five years after she dropped her album CTRL, the singer-songwriter released the deluxe version, featuring seven new songs, including “Awkward.” On the track, SZA delivers stunning vocals over woozy production as she recounts a complicated relationship. “I cannot love evеrybody, but you isn’t anybody/ You look at me different, so I lеt you see my body/ And now we don’t speak at all/ Now I regret it all,” she sings. The deluxe was released in celebration of CTRL’s five-year anniversary. 

Nardo Wick, “Riot”

“Riot” is a sinister and rebellious track from Nardo Wick that finds the Jacksonville, Florida artist rapping about making it out of the trenches, but still being ready to cause havoc when necessary. “Load the guns up and wait for the sun to go down/ We’re gonna start a riot/ About my loved ones, no understanding at all/ I’m gonna start a riot,” he raps. “Riot” is a haunting track that will appear on Nardo’s upcoming project, Who Is Nardo Wick 2?

6LACK, “Umi Says”

“Umi Says” is a slow-burning, soulful record that sounds like it could serve as a backdrop for a late-night jazz club. On the track, 6LACK delivers melancholic vocals about seizing the moment and living each day to the fullest, singing, “Tomorrow may never show up/ For you or me, this life is not promised/ I ain’t no perfect man/ I’m tryin’ to do the best that I can.” Later, he sings, “I want black people to be free, to be free, to be free.” “Umi Says” is a single release in celebration of Juneteenth. 

Saucy Santana f/ Latto, “Booty”

Saucy Santana is back and he’s brought a friend. Over a sample of Beyonce’s 2003 hit “Crazy In Love,” Santana delivers a high-spirited, intoxicating, and twerkable chorus and verse. “Big bank, how I get it/ CashApp, no limit/ Make him pass out when he hit it,” he raps. Latto matches Santana’s energy with a fiery verse, spitting, “Love it when I poke it out and it that fake sleep/ Hit it from the back, makin’ beats like Tay Keith.” “Booty” is Santana’s third single to go viral on Tiktok. 

Rubi Rose, “Wifey”

“Wifey” is an electric new single from Rubi Rose that has a rock vibe going on. Rubi orders listeners to talk to her nicely, before bragging about her designer jewels and shading her haters. “Two-tone my Chanel with the matchin’ rocks/ Rap bitches in the dirt, y’all can match the opps,” she spits. “Wifey” doesn’t appear to be connected to any project at this time. 

Polo G, “Distraction”

“Distraction” is a reflective track from Polo G that finds the Chicago native discussing his come-up in the rap game. He also reflects on his childhood and the influence that violence has had on his life and outlook. “Baby, Chiraq is my birthplace, if we got a problem, we slump it/ Hard times spent, it’s the worst pain and you never get refunded, uh,” Polo G raps over CuBeatz and Southside co-production. “Distraction” is the first release from Polo G this year and follows the 2021 release of Hall of Fame 2.0

Rae Sremmurd, “Denial”

Rae Sremmurd is back with “Denial,” a melodic track from the rap duo. Swae Lee begins with a soft verse about relationships, loyalty, and heartbreak, singing “I seen so many fairytale loves go bad/ I heard so many say they’ll never love again/ I walked away and I never turned back.” “Denial” is expected to appear on the duo’s upcoming album Sremm4Life
