For music fans, the general assumption is that rappers want to be athletes and athletes want to be rappers. In his latest interview with Billboard, Freddie Gibbs furthers this notion when he compares his recent career moves (and the hate they've brought him) to Kevin Durant joining the Golden State Warriors.
For over a decade, Freddie Gibbs has been maneuvered the industry as a dominant independent artist. Although he's consistently put out well-received projects on his own, Gibbs signed a deal with RCA Records/Keep Cool in March. The rapper faced some blowback for this decision from fans questioning his dedication to the underground. To this, Gibbs offers a blunt retort.
"Them n****s can eat a dick. I got kids," Gibbs stated to Billboard. "Any motherfucker from outside looking into a business could try to tell you how to run it, but they don't know... This is what we've been waiting for and what we've been grinding for. This is an opportunity to compete with the best on the best level. I could run circles around these little independent n****s all day. I want to be up there with the top echelon rappers because that's what the fuck I am."
He also expanded on the Durant comparison during that time.
"I've been doing my shit, and I just haven't been winning the chips. Me going over with [RCA's executive president of A&R] Tunji [Balogun] and Keep Cool to RCA, it's about to be steroids on this shit," he said.
Gibbs will get a chance to showcase why he deserves to be rap's Finals MVP at the end of this month. The rapper joined forces with super-producer Madlib to create their upcoming tape, Bandana. This is the follow up to 2014's widely popular Piñata project and will drop on June 28 through RCA Records/Keep Cool.
