Montreal hip-hop music festival Metro Metro will not be happening in 2024.

The announcement was made on the festival's social media pages.

"Although we've had memorable times together in recent editions, we've decided to take a break in 2024," the message said. "The festival has experienced some safety issues, particularly during the 2023 edition, and we wish to take the time to review all aspects of the festival to ensure safety and improve the experience for our festivalgoers."

It was recently announced that the Metro Metro festival, and its Latin music offshoot Fuego Fuego, had been sold by Midway Group to Evenko, the promoter responsible for Osheaga.

Some of the safety issues in question include people jumping the fence and trying to get on site without paying. The Olympic Park esplanade site also led to some bottle necking.

The festival has had its share of ups and downs since its founding. In the first year, they nabbed Cardi B as a headliner. Two years ago, Drake unexpectedly showed up for Lil Baby's headlining set.

Last year, things didn't go as planned when Lil Wayne cut his headlining set short after he showed up 45 minutes late.

The Metro Metro name will live on in 2024 with regular indoor shows around town, including A Boogie With Da Hoodie at the Bell Centre on Sept. 12.
