Who has the best producer tag?
Metro Boomin? Pi’erre Bourne? Or maybe a veteran producer like Just Blaze?
There are a lot to choose from. A couple of years ago, the Complex Music staff ranked the top 25 producer tags, but now it’s time to ask someone who has first-hand experience creating iconic tags himself: Tay Keith. The Memphis native recently sat down alongside fellow producer Banbwoi, and the two came up with a top 5 list of their own. You can see their full breakdown on our TikTok (or watch it below).
The list, which Tay Keith clarified is in no particular order, is the following: Metro Boomin, Pi’erre Bourne, Wheezy, Mustard, Don Cannon, and Banbwoi (who recently landed a tag on Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss standout “Spin Bout U”). Yes, we realize they broke the rules and named six tags instead of five. Tay Keith left himself off the list in order to make more room for others, and he added an honorable mention to the end: Drumma Boy, another influential producer from Memphis.
Tay Keith also spoke about why he left his tags off of all three songs he produced on Her Loss: “Rich Flex,” “Circo Loco,” and “Broke Boys.”
“I just felt like my sound is kind of distinct now and I didn’t want to burn it out with the tags,” he explained. “People can listen to it and be like, ‘Damn, I know this a Tay Keith beat.’ And then look it up the credits and be like, ‘Damn, I was right.’ It gives you a different feeling than hearing the tag with the beat.”
