Selena Struggles With Fame in New Netflix Documentary Trailer: ‘Tired of Being on Camera’

'Selena y Los Dinos,' a new documentary featuring never-before-seen footage of the Mexican-American icon, premieres on November 17.

A trailer for Selena’s new documentary is finally here, and it gives a rare glimpse into the late Tejano superstar’s soaring highs and emotional lows.

On Tuesday (Oct. 21), Netflix released the trailer for Selena y Los Dinos: A Family's Legacy, the upcoming documentary celebrating the life and influence of the Mexican-American music icon. The film, directed by Isabel Castro, will give fans a look into Selena’s life through never-before-seen home videos from her family’s personal archive, concert footage, and more.

The nearly three-minute trailer also teases new interviews from her family, including father Abraham Quintanilla, mother Marcella Quintanilla, and Selena’s siblings and former bandmates, A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla-Arriaga.

One of the more emotional moments in the visual comes from the “Amor Prohibido” singer’s widower and former guitarist Chris Perez, who says in a voice over, “People imagine her as this force but she had her vulnerable side.”

Shortly after, an emotional Selena is seen saying, “I’m tired of being on camera all the time.”

The Grammy Award winner catapulted to fame in the early nineties thanks to hit singles like “Como La Flor,” “Baila Esta Cumbia,” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” She was tragically killed at age 23 in 1995 by her former fan club president, Yolanda Saldívar.

In the aftermath of her death, Selena’s story has been told several times, from the 1997 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos to the 2020 Netflix series, Selena: The Series.

The new documentary, which premiered earlier this year at Sundance and later at SXSW, also shows lesser-seen moments, such as a teenage Selena joking with her sister about clothes, confiding in interviews about losing touch with friends due to touring, and smiling before signing her first major record deal with EMI.

“Going over all the videos of what our life was then brought on different emotions,” Suzette told Rolling Stone. “Nothing will ever heal my heart, but it made me feel happy to be able to sit back and see what we created together and to realize our hard work paid off.”

“For me, what makes me so emotional is that every time you see it, you want the ending to be different,” said Castro.

Selena y Los Dinos premieres on Netflix on November 17.
