When setting out to make his second studio album Fine Line, Harry Styles decided to welcome a more fun mentality.

That, for him, meant experimenting with psychedelic mushrooms. In a new interview with Zane Lowe, Styles discussed the standards he set for himself when he was in One Direction.

“When I was in the band… it felt like it was so much bigger than any of us that I kind of felt like, ‘I'm not going to be the one who fucks it up,’” the 25-year-old said. “So I was like, ‘Now is the time in my life when you probably go out and experiment and do this and you take this and you do that and that's what you do with your friends.’”

Styles said he embraced the new experience and took mushrooms to enjoy himself and feed his creativity, adding that they were even therapeutic. “Making this record felt like—I just felt... so much more joyous.” He continued. “And I was with my friends and we were in Malibu...I felt so safe. It was like, ‘I want to take some mushrooms? I'm going to take some—like now is the time to have fun.”

Back in August, the singer discussed doing mushrooms during an interview with Rolling Stone as well: “We'd do mushrooms, lie down on the grass, and listen to Paul McCartney's Ram in the sunshine,” he said.

His album Fine Line drops on Dec. 13. Watch his interview with Zane Lowe above.
