People Sound Off on Super Bowl Halftime Show's Predominantly White Drumline

The drumline that accompanied Maroon 5 on stage during the Super Bowl halftime show was predominately white, and it didn't go unnoticed.

During Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi's Super Bowl halftime performance, a drumline accompanied the artists on stage to provide an acoustic intro to Maroon 5's "Girls Like You." Many probably remember when Beyonce similarly incorporated a drumline into her iconic 2016 Super Bowl performance. However, the key difference between the two performances is that this year, most of the drummers were white.

Many people instantly took to Twitter to comment on the lack of racial diversity. The move was particularly disrespectful given the Super Bowl is being hosted in Atlanta, a city with some of the best historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the country.

Someone pitched Maroon 5 into Spongebob into an asteroid into Travis Scott into the whitest drumline back to Maroon 5 and hundreds of executives said yes

The NFL wanted to tout Atlanta’s rich civil rights history but couldn’t have an HBCU dry line up there?

I’m sorry but a drumline full of caucasians in Atlanta is so disrespectful! #PepsiHalftime

A mostly white drum line in Atlanta is a hate crime

Only the NFL with a Maroon 5 halftime show in Atlanta would find a mostly white drumline to put on the stage
