Lion Babe Has No Plans of Slowing Down

Lion Babe's Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman draw inspiration from the diversity of New York City.

Lion Babe’s dynamic, always-moving lead singer Jillian Hervey has been immersed in dance for nearly her entire life—from studying ballet to being a student of Martha Graham’s modern technique.

“I would say dance and New York are the biggest things that define who I am,” she says, in Chapter 2 of Complex’s “Run the Show” series.

Growing up in the predominantly white town of Chappaqua, New York, Jillian shares how at one point there was just two other Black girls in her grade. Now, it’s the constantly vibrating diversity of the Big Apple—comprised of all races, ages, and walks of life—that stirs her.

Both Hervey and her Lion Babe partner, producer Lucas Goodman, may have met at a party in Boston, but their experimental soul vibe is New York through and through—grounded yet always moving.
