Maroon 5 were supposed to perform in Shanghai and Beijing in September, but both shows got canceled earlier this week.

According to BBC, Live Nation didn’t reveal exactly why the shows were pulled, but it may have to do with a band member tweeting the Dalai Lama and wishing him a happy birthday.

The tweet was sent by keyboard player Jesse Carmichael, which he wrote he “sang happy birthday to his holiness.” If it did anger Chinese authorities, this wouldn’t be the first time. Oasis had to cancel shows a few years ago in China after they learned Noel Gallagher performed a Free Tibet concert in New York.

Maroon 5 haven’t made a comment on the show’s cancellations yet.
