Bay Area songstress Kehlani's video for "First Position" challenges viewers to look beyond the status quo of most music videos, and casts only ladies in the David Camarena directed video. Highlighting the relationship dynamics of the LGBTQ community, the song and video subverts the trope of a traditional relationship as the 19-year-old sings to a woman, not a man. It's a refreshing dynamic, and one of many excellent songs from her critically acclaimed Cloud 19 mixtape, that sets her apart from her peers. The video is dimly lit, using only a few colors to express the story of the two leading ladies who are in love. Intercut with scenes of Kehlani looking very angelic it is definitely one of the most interesting videos of the year so far. Check out "First Position" above, and stream Kehlani's Cloud 19 here.
