An elementary school teacher in South Carolina was arrested on Friday after one of her students allegedly took a marijuana edible from the classroom’s prize box.
According to Fox News, 27-year-old Victoria Farish Weiss is facing possession of a Schedule I drug charge after turning herself in last week for having the edible in the classroom. Authorities launched an investigation into the incident last month on Sept. 23 after reports came out of Rocky Creek Elementary School that a student had picked an edible from the prize box.
Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon shared in a statement via Facebook that when Weiss realized the student had chosen the edible from the box, she told him to choose something else instead.
“Detectives confirmed during interviews that Weiss took the pack of edibles from the student and told him to pick something else from the box,” he said.
However, after the student went back into the prize box to choose something else, he ended up picking a separate edible that was there. It wasn’t until later in the day when the child went to daycare and asked for assistance opening the pack that an adult realized that the gummies were actually edibles that contained 350 mg of THC. The sheriff confirmed that no student in Weiss’ class ate an edible.
“Marijuana edibles are cannabis-based food products. They come in many forms, but the items in this case were candy,” Koon added. “They’re often packaged in wrappers and bags with logos and colors that look similar to traditional candy brands.”
As cited by Insider, Rocky Creek’s superintendent Dr. Greg Little also released a statement saying that the incident was “unacceptable.”
“The safety of our students is our top priority,” Dr. Little wrote. “It is unacceptable for a staff member to potentially threaten the wellbeing of a child. We will continue to work to ensure all of our children have a safe environment to learn and grow. Rocky Creek Elementary has a sterling reputation which will not be tarnished by the actions of one person.”
Weiss is no longer employed by the school district.
