A Montana father and his 18-month-old daughter were killed on Tuesday after a man allegedly drove into them and shot them with a shotgun, NBC Montana reports.

David Siau, 39, and McKenzie Siau were killed in the attack, and two other women who were present were critically injured and remain hospitalized. Christina Siau, 30, who was holding their daughter McKenzie at the time of the attack, had previously been in a relationship with the suspect, 37-year-old Derick Madden.

Christina then killed Madden after he attacked her with a knife. Officials said he had been “suffering from mental health issues.”

The attack occurred in East Glacier Park on Sunday night outside Glacier National Park on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. According to the sheriff’s office, Madden “purposely” drove his vehicle into the group before crashing into a tree and stepping out of the vehicle with a shotgun.

“Madden began shooting at the same victims he had just hit or attempted to hit,” the sheriff’s office said. He fatally wounded David Siau, and “continued to shoot at the victims” as they fled.

“During this attack Christina fought for her life and despite receiving critical injuries, fatally wounded Madden,” the sheriff’s office said without going into further details on how she killed him.

The Sheriff’s Office added in a statement the attack was, “isolated to this incident with a clear nexus between the victims and Madden.” While David and Madden were pronounced dead at the scene, McKenzie Siau was transported to Indiana Health Service in Browning, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Christina Siau had moved to East Glacier from New York, where her family had been visiting from. Madden had been working in the town and was originally from Oklahoma.

Two other children who were also with the group were not injured, the sheriff’s office added.

“The investigation continues and detectives are working tirelessly to find all the details and circumstances surrounding this horrific event,” the statement concluded.
