Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident on Sunday, which locals have attributed largely to luck. The boat, however, did sustain minor damage.

A 19-foot boat is said to have been “in the right place at the wrong time” following a wild water-breaching whale incident caught in since-made-viral footage.

As you’ve likely seen making the usual rounds in recent days, the footage in question—which shows vessels off the coast of Massachusetts in the Plymouth area, per a report from NBC10 Boston—managed to capture the exact moment a whale (likely a humpback) breached the water and landed atop the boat.

Speaking with the regional NBC outlet, Chad Hunter—identified as the Plymouth Harbormaster—noted the rarity of such an occurrence while also highlighting the undeniable luck involved.

“This could have been much worse for all involved,” Hunter said, adding that kids in the are are fond of leaning over the sides of vessels.

The whale-wack occurred Sunday morning off the coast of White Horse Beach in Plymouth. Per local reports, no injuries were sustained during the temporary pairing of whale and boat. The boat itself, however, was confirmed to have endured mild damage to the bow.

Per a separate report from WCVB, it’s worth pointing out here that locals have spotted whales on multiple occasions in recent days in the same area where this viral footage was captured. To be fair, the ocean is indeed the whale’s preferred residence, making our presence there as mere humans—no matter how undeniably enjoyable it may be—a certain nuisance for them. In short, it’s more or less the equivalent of bursting into their house and then being surprised by them making themselves at home, but I digress.
