Emoji License Plates Are a Thing Now

Remember 'The Emoji Movie' and all its related horrors? We are still living in its nightmarish shadow.

Because apparently the abject horrors of The Emoji Movie taught us nothing, emoji-assisted license plates are about to be a thing.

License personalization options in the Australian state of Queensland will soon include emoji, a move that will surely be followed by other Powers That Be instituting similar policy updates.

"For quite some time we've seen that you can support your favorite team or your favorite town with a symbol on your number plate," Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) spokesperson Dr. Rebecca Michael told 7News Brisbane Tuesday. "And using an emoji is no different."

At first, the emoji available to be added to license plates will include a selection of five fairly standard variants ranging from heart eyes to sunglasses. Annoyingly, adding a sad face emoji to one’s plate won't immediately be an option.

Officials note that these emoji are purely decorative, i.e. not a part of the registration number that's still required to appear on plates. Emoji-assisted plates in Queensland will be available starting at around $340 on March 1.

Horrifyingly, I can see this all somehow resulting in another Emoji Movie.
