Surrey RCMP arrested a man after he reportedly stabbed a father and son unprovoked in the Surrey Memorial Hospital.

The incident happened on Saturday night and the injuries the two sustained are not life-threatening.

“It appears it was an unprovoked assault, and the parties were not previously known to each other,” Surrey RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Vanessa Munn said according to the Vancouver Sun.

The suspect, Alex Joseph Flett is facing charges including aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. No motive has been confirmed yet.

“This was a disturbing incident for all those impacted, including the victims, their family, patients, visitors and staff at the hospital,” Munn added. “We are grateful for the very quick actions of hospital security, who were able to intervene, holding the suspect as police quickly arrived to take the man into custody.”

The father and son were visiting another patient at the time in the area where patients are triaged.

Flett is expected to appear in Surrey provincial court today where he’ll also respond to charges laid against him back in 2019.
