Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre said his government would require porn websites to verify the age of users.
According to CTV, he provided a one word answer, "yes," when asked if he would change the law to make it so porn websites verify the age of users accessing their content.
He didn't go into specifics of how that would be done, but afterwards through a statement said his party doesn't "believe in the imposition of a digital ID."
His party is already sponsoring and supporting a bill in the Senate that would require age verification in order to access pornography online. Under the proposed law, sites would have to determine a person's age before they can access porn, and if not, the websites could face penalties.
The response to the proposed law didn't go down well in the comments. Specifically, commenters were asking why a supposed "small government" Conservative Party was suddenly so preoccupied with online porn.
Others pointed out the other obvious fact: do we really want to be giving our IDs to porn sites?
There are sites with age gates, but they tend to operate on the honour system.
So far, the Conservative Party hasn't proposed a way for porn sites to keep track of users' ages in an effective way.
