Step 2: Get down and dirty (in the soil), and plant your new greenery in a community garden. Urban-conservation organizations, such as NYC's MillionTrees and Los Angeles' City Plants, can help you get involved with tree-planting events, and even provide free trees for your home or neighborhood.

Change.org and chill. Instead of binge-watching House of Cards on Netflix, spend a night in, browsing campaigns and petitions to sign to show your support for meaningful causes. Order takeout, snuggle up together, and change the world with a few keystrokes—all from the comfort of your bed.

Go shopping at a farmers' market, and cook an extra meal for someone in need. Not only does this two-pronged approach support local farmers who sell organic produce, it also gives back to your community.

Another option? Volunteer to serve hot meals at a homeless shelter for date night.
