Iowa Rep. Steve King has sparked backlash for comments made during a discussion at the Westside Conservative Club in Urbandale, Iowa. The Republican defended his position against laws allowing abortion exceptions if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, and suggested that humanity would not exist if not for rape and incest.

"What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?" King said during the discussion. "Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can’t say that I was not a part of a product of that."

Needless to say, Twitter was flooded with calls for Steve King to resign. Bernie Sanders also commented, writing, "Steve King is a racist, a misogynist and a disgrace to the country."

Steve King is a racist, a misogynist and a disgrace to the country. He should not be a member of the United States Congress. https://t.co/QZbXSEFpdw

House Republicans have already stripped Steve King of his committee assignments.

They can, theoretically, expel him from the House Republican Conference. They’d need 2/3 of all House Republicans.

Steve King has no place in Congress. Time and time again, he has embarrassed himself and denigrated his office.

Hey, @JDScholten, I’m ready for another Winnebago road trip—it’s time to unseat this bigot.https://t.co/eHnsSqLA7F

My friend @JDScholten is standing up and fighting back against Steve King, and he needs all of our help — because no matter where you live, you know there’s no place for Steve King’s racism, bigotry, and hatred in Congress.

King has previously garnered criticism for his racism in the past. He has been criticised for his embrace of far-right media personalities and just last year voiced his concern over a white genocide conspiracy theory, which he called "the great replacement."
