Even with the support of huge celebrities like Beyoncé and Travis Scott, and record voter turnout, it was a long shot for Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke to unseat evil Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in the midterms. But after losing the election on Tuesday, support of the El Paso-based politician has yet to wane.
The race in Texas was close, as Beto trailed within three points of Cruz. Voters in Texas and beyond are now pushing for a presidential run with the hashtag #Beto2020, even though O’Rourke previously expressed he had no interest in running for president.
Beto is also generating news after he said "fuck" during his concession speech. The politician is no stranger to profanity, but last night’s use got national attention after it was aired on cable television. “Tonight’s loss does nothing to diminish the way I feel about Texas or this country. I’m so fucking proud of you guys,” O’Rourke said.
There’s still a lot of time between now and the 2020 election. We’re not even sure Beto will run, but what we are sure of is that there are a million ways to do the real work now that the elections are over. If you’re disappointed by election results, or trying to combat the Trump organization, join local grassroots organizations, attend protests, stay up to date on boycotts, donate your time and money to those who need protection, learn how to reduce your impact on the environment. Marginalized groups can’t wait until 2020 for change.
