While many remain in the midst of accepting last night's election results, world leaders are beginning to share their official statements. One of these leaders is Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, whose country's immigration website crashed due to a wave of unexpected traffic. During the presidential campaign, many have joked that a Trump victory would fuel citizens to jump north of the border, escaping to a seemingly liberal oasis. While Trudeau has proven to be a believer in progressive politics, the Prime Minister still offered his congratulations to new president-elect, Donald Trump.

In his official statement, the Prime Minister cited that the two nations share similar beliefs and ideals. Below is the transcript of the government's press release.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Donald J. Trump on his election as the next President of the United States.

“Canada has no closer friend, partner, and ally than the United States. We look forward to working very closely with President-elect Trump, his administration, and with the United States Congress in the years ahead, including on issues such as trade, investment, and international peace and security.

“The relationship between our two countries serves as a model for the world.  Our shared values, deep cultural ties, and strong integrated economies will continue to provide the basis for advancing our strong and prosperous partnership.”

Unsurprisingly, Canadian social media collectively shook its head at the necessary, but still unfortunate acceptance by Trudeau's team. Many users were quick to share their frustration, by responding directly to the PM's tweet.

Good luck to working with Trump for the next 4 years. You and Obama had a thing going.

Following his statement, Trudeau reiterated his sentiments and vowed to continue to work hard in the best interest of Canadians across the country.
