A recent health crisis made Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne believe she was dying.

In an interview with People magazine, the Napanee native revealed that she’s spent the last six months of her life coping with Lyme disease, a bacterial condition transmitted through bites by infected ticks. The disease has a wide range of side effects, including rashes, fevers, headaches, tiredness, and a loss of mobility.

"I had no idea a bug bite could do this," said Lavigne. "I was bedridden for five months." The “Complicated” singer was diagnosed while celebrating her 30th birthday in Las Vegas last October, after spending much of her day lying in bed instead of celebrating.

Lavigne says she’s now feeling “80 percent better,” but not after enduring severe symptoms brought on by Lyme disease. "I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move...I thought I was dying." Now that’s she’s on the road to recovery, she’s preparing to release new music before the end of the month. Her new single “Fly” will be released soon, in advance of the 2015 Special Olympics.

The whole ordeal has been an extreme wake-up call for Avril. "I really just want to enjoy life from here on out."
