NLE Choppa, born Bryson Lashun Potts, grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and has been managed by his mother, Angela Potts, since he began releasing music under the stage name YRN Choppa. After generating buzz from a cypher music video he did with his Choppa collective, NLE Choppa exploded with the release of his song “Shotta Flow.”
“Shotta Flow” would be the catalyst for much for NLE Choppa’s early success, with the catchy track gaining 10 million views within a month of it being released and jumping on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in May 2019. NLE Choppa would follow this success by adding an equally energized remix to the song featuring Blueface, along with an animated music video directed by Cole Bennett. NLE Choppa kept his foot on the pedal and dropped “Shotta Flow 2” shortly after, generating millions more views and giving Choppa the push he needed to become a full-fledged rap star.
Straying from a traditional career route, NLE Choppa turned away major label offers and decided to sign with distribution company UnitedMasters. He dropped a flurry of singles, including his viral song “Camelot,” which peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and also received a Lyrical Lemonade music video. His debut EP, Cottonwood, and a series of other singles would only build buzz for NLE Choppa’s 2020 debut album, Top Shotta, which was followed by his project From Dark to Light that he dropped on his birthday. In 2020, he picked up planting and meditation, and vowed to no longer rap about violence in his songs. In the same year, he also faced several legal issues and allegations, which drew backlash and criticism from fans. At this time, the legal issues are ongoing and unresolved.
