THE ART OF MANAGING YOUR TIME (IN STYLE)
Actor and Artist Tristan “Mack” Wilds Gives Us Tips on Managing Time
Recently, we discussed self-management with serial entrepreneur and father Ajay Relan to feature Bonobos’ latest Chinos offerings. This week, we collaborated with actor and singer Tristan “Mack” Wilds to show you why Bonobos’ latest Chinos are an evergreen wardrobe solution for every guy and every occasion. While Mack’s passions and sense of style are different from Ajay’s, both are equally stylish, driven men who require an on-the-go, flexible wardrobe.
Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, Mack first established his career as an actor. He starred in Spike Lee’s Miracle Boys, the teen drama series 90210, the film The Secret Life of Bees, and as Adele’s love interest in her 2015 hit “Hello.” But his passions don’t stop at acting. For the last decade or so, Mack has also pursued music having released two studio albums, the Grammy-nominated New York: A Love Story and its 2017 followup, AfterHours. At just 29, he’s been wildly successful in his chosen fields. We sat down with the multi-talented man to get his tips on managing time.
Be aware of where your time goes.
Mack’s number one tip for managing your time is to fully understand your current schedule. He tells Complex, “I think a lot of people, when we think about what we want to become, we don't take into consideration what we're already doing at the moment, whether it's your regular job, or your time with your kids, or whatever it may be. Being aware of your current schedule is key.”
It’s only after you know where your time goes, that you can carve out space to pursue your goals. He highly recommends limiting time spent on Instagram saying, “Last year, I gave up Instagram for religious reasons, and I realized, I don't even know what to do with my hands. You don’t know how much time it takes up of your day.”
Now, instead of Instagram, Mack relies on long blocks of unscheduled time to focus, a calendar trait he borrowed from business magnate Warren Buffet. He uses this time to do introspective work or read. Doing so helps him to connect to himself in order to make music that’s true or to connect with characters in a script. Mack is currently reading Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power.
The actor reminds Complex, “Do whatever you need to do in the time you have, whether it’s carving out one or two hours to put in your 10,000 hours to become an expert in your chosen field (as suggested in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers).”
Just as he’s mastered acting and music, Mack has his style down pat. In true East Coast fashion, he’s a fan of layering. Repeat top combinations for him include varsity jackets over hoodies, denim pieces over hoodies (or tees), and linen jackets over white tees.
Here he picks the Bonobos Stretch Washed Chinos in Congos as his go-to casual pant to match his jacket over shirt combos.
Remember time is man-made.
Mack tells Complex, “The best thing about time that a lot of people don't realize... and I'm giving you guys a little secret... The best thing about time is that it's man-made. We all get caught up in, ‘Oh, wait, I got to get this done now. I have to hurry up. I got to get this done, because I am this old and I am going to die, this and whatever.’ Time is man-made, you do what you have to do, in whatever time that you have to do it, and you'll get it done.”.
He remembers advice Childish Gambino gave him, “Get it out... when you see a script, or whenever you feel like you have a song in your spirit, and you want to sing, or you want to rap, get it out, however you feel it, you got to get it out.” You don’t need to wait for the right moment or prepare endlessly to pull the trigger on your dreams. Take action now to be inspired.
When Mack isn’t spending time reading or producing in the studio, he’s hitting bars to observe people and catch vibes with his best friend Greg Cally—vibes he later translates into creative inspiration to be used in his music or scripts. Sometimes, instead of observing, Mack practices a character role during his night crawls. Here he chooses the Bonobos’ Premium Stretch Chinos in Lake Life as a serious going out staple, but, for a little fun, taps a high-spirited floral shirt to cue a “rap star in the club” personality.
“Don't be afraid,” Mack tells us. “Take the leap. The feeling of doing it, you'll know you're doing the right thing, because you'll fall in love with the subtle nuances of it. A lot of people kind of think the magic will come, like if you build it, it will come, and all of this. A lot of times it will, but you know that you're doing what you're supposed to be doing when you fall in love with things that you think nobody else would love.”
Although you might expect Mack Wilds, a Grammy-nominated star, to be endlessly decked out in Supreme or Undercover, he does stay low-key with Bonobos Chinos. Based in NYC with over 60 Guideshops across the country to help you shop online, Bonobos offers reliable versatile options for your wardrobe.
