Over at Jezebel, there's currently a crazy excerpt of the book Champagne Supernovas, a documentation by Maureen Callahan about the influential figures from the 90s who helped to transform the fashion world. One of the most notable figures is, of course, Kate Moss. The excerpt explores the early days of Kate's career, when she'd just dropped out of high school to pursue modeling full-time.
It was aspiring photographer Corinne Day that saw the potential in Kate, inviting her to move in with her as she attempted to get her own career off the ground. Moss, even at the age of 15 was a rapscallion, drinking heavily enough to miss her flight home after opening the John Galliano runway show in 1990. Then there was that party during Paris Fashion Week, when a photographer greatly lacking foresight called Moss a "common bitch" to her face, which, as I understand it, is the British equivalent of calling someone "white trash." As to be expected, Moss responded by laughing directly in his stupid fucking face. With some help, Moss eventually ended up at the Calvin Klein casting that led to her infamous campaign with Mark Wahlberg, who, at the time, was still a wannabee rapper and decidedly not into the boyish-looking Moss, though, apparently, he was really into "tugging his dick." Regardless, the campaign saved CK and launched Moss toward stardom.
We all know who Kate Moss is, but few of us actually know how she became Kate Moss. Granted, this may be because we don't spend a ton of time investigating the pasts of the biggest supermodels in the world.
