Cute as she may be, Sarah Joncas doesn't shy away from dark themes. Her paintings explore death and loss, embracing the potential for complete loss of control. The Canadian-born artist will hold her second show at New York's Last Rights Gallery this week, bringing with her 14 new paintings and one drawing.

Joncas doesn't stray from her tradition of lone figures in elusive narratives. The paintings still pack a painful punch, the viewer wondering what fate will become the subject, what madness will overcome the scene.

Talking Over runs from December 8 to January 12, 2013.

Last Rights Gallery, 511 w. 33rd Street, New York
