When the now-famous Kanye West Kim Kardashian Vogue cover released, the assumption was that, despite rumors of otherwise, Anna Wintour does in fact like Kim. The cover was proof of that. While the head honcho of the women's mag may still be a fan of the reality star, it turns out, she wasn't the one who put Kim on the cover.
The Financial Times recently sat down with Vogue's creative director, Grace Coddington, who revealed that she was the one who facilitated the KimYe cover, making it one of few exceptions for Coddington, who prefers to put models on the cover. "There was a wedding story to be done," she told the FT. "And Anna probably had them in mind, because she had been seeing a lot of Kanye, so she said, ‘Maybe we should shoot it on lookalikes.’ And I thought, ‘Why not just do it on the real thing? This is Vogue.’ And I do think Kim Kardashian represents this moment in our culture. I’m fascinated by her, in the same way I’m fascinated by the people I see on the street or the subway.”
According to Coddington, she asked five designers to custom make outfits for Kim and Kanye, without revealing their identities initially. "I thought they would guess immediately when I sent the measurements but they didn’t," she said. "It wasn’t until the fitting they knew, and it still somehow stayed a secret.”
Coddington also went onto say that the shoot was "fun," adding that Kim was "very professional." When it came to baby North, she said she "got upset we did not have the baby on the cover." She also touched on the reaction to the cover, recalling when she received an envelope from Texas with the cover torn to pieces inside.
