British designer Thomas Heatherwick has unveiled plans for a new public park and performance art space to be built where the dilapidated pier 54 once stood on New York's Lower West Side. Titled Pier55, the $130 million project is set to begin in 2016 and will completely transform the site with a green island constructed above the river.

Heatherwick Studio worked with landscape architect Mathews Nielsen to design the 2.7-acre pier, its green spaces, and its amphitheater. According to Designboom, the project will be funded primarily by the Diller-Von Furstenberg Family Foundation. "I know a good deal when I see one," said Mayor Di Blasio about the project. "If someone offers us a lot of resources to create something we need and with minimal investment by the city, I think that’s great."
Bloomberg reports that the city will contribute $17 million to the project, and New York State will build an $18 million promenade to the island park.
