Terry Richardson opened his solo exhibition, “The Sacred and Profane,” this weekend at the Galerie Perrotin in Paris. Last month it was announced that the photographer would present this exhibition, his first with the gallery since 1999, featuring images from across the West Coast that capture the American summer rituals like fairs and parades.

Along Richardson's two-year journey, his vision evolved when he become interested in the relationship between beauty and vulgarity after realizing the ironic juxtaposition between the religious omnipresence and the sex industry that he could not ignore. The concept is reflected in several of his photos, like the one of a billboard with an image of Jesus located next to an adult video store sign.

The Galerie Perrotin did say prior to the opening that they were strictly representing the work of Richardson and not the questionable reputation that precedes him. Playboy recently came under fire for hiring the photographer to shoot a special edition issue. Regardless of the controversy surrounding his actions, the images in his new show reflect the talent that made him such a prominent artist. The exhibit will run through April 11.
