If you're like us, your parents had a lot to do with why you're so into cars. As of right now, they've lived through more car trends than you have, they've probably driven more cars than you have, and they've lived with cars that we would chop off our own left pinky toe for (not sure about the right one). But one aspect of cars and driving has, for the most part stayed the same: the rules of the road, also known as laws.

If you're like us (we're not sure if that's a good thing), you were probably also taught how to drive by your parents. They did a good job at providing a solid base for us to build on top of. But that's all we want it to be: a base. After a couple years of building that base, there's no need to worry or continually comment when they're in the passenger's seat. That's why we're here to ask, "why do parents still insist on pushing their opinions on our driving?" If you can relate check out our thoughts on The Worst Parts of Driving With Your Parents.

"The speed limit is 45 ..."

Yes. The speed limit is 45. The parents would be correct in this regard. Lucky for them, that 52 that we're doing (and do every time we're driving) isn't putting anybody in such horrific danger that I need to be hawking for a cop with a radar.

"Is that how you always shift/steer/signal/accelerate?

It's one thing to offer some constructive criticism. Sometimes, people do need some tips on shifting or general driving ettiquette. And for the most part, we'd definitely take that from our parents ... when we were 17. Now that we're in our mid-late twenties and that criticism is still flowing faster than Jon Gruden's high praise for every single player in the NFL ("Man! This guy is just somethin' special!"), it's time for you to stop, parents. We've been driving long enough to know a thing or two, so A). You're sending us back into the headspace where we don't want to listen to anything you tell us we're bad at B). Just because we're not doing it "your way" doesn't make it wrong," and C). One driver's education class was enough, thank you.

"I taught you better than that."

Oh, did you? Did you really? That's funny, because even though you told me to go exactly the speed limit, we consistently saw you going over when you were behind the wheel. We heard you curse that guy off for cutting in front of you and saw you speed up just so you could cut him off, as well. We saw you cross three lanes without signaling, and we definitely saw you turn on red, even though it the sign clearly said "NO TURN ON RED." You should know that "do as I say" stuff is bullshit.

"Why did you waste so much money on this car?"

We get it. Parents are natural worriers. They worry about our financial situation, they worry about our future, and they worry about us being responsible. But hopefully that worrying could be quelled by the fact that they know they can trust us. And by the fact that they know their kids enough to know that cars are important to us. Instead of drilling about the expenses, why not try a compliment about how nice the car is?

You see them physically tensing up.

Mother's are out there grabbing the oh-shit handle like they just saw Jason chop off somebody's arm, then pick his own nose with it. When other people are tense while we're driving, it makes us more tense. We have peripheral vision, you know. We see when you're incorrectly reacting to our normal driving.

"HUH, EEE, WOAH, AHH, SSTTTT"

It's just a coincidence that the sounds your mother makes in the car are the same as ... never mind. The radio becomes all the more crucial when your passenger is sitting there acting like you're on a roller coaster, all because you stopped behind somebody at a stoplight just a tad bit too close. You might not be literally saying anything to us, but the sounds are just as annoying.

"What is this nonsense you're listening to?"

This NONSENSE is the music that we listen to every single day. It's the music we actively seeked out online and decided to add it to our streaming que. It's the type of art that we prefer over anything that you'd listen to. And if we want to hear Asher Roth making a dick joke or Kanye West screaming at the top of his lungs or the Weeknd explicitally talking about the hooker he's going to have sex with, then that's our choice. *Changes playlist to "Music That Annoys My Parents."

"Get out of the car, I'm driving."

This is the ultimate attempt at a power move on their part, but just know this: Unless you're still living under their roof, and they have some control over paying for your education (or something of the like), you don't have to take that. You know how to drive. Tell them to sit their ass back in the seat and calm down like a normal adult.
