Las Vegas Police Reopen 2009 Sexual Assault Investigation Involving Cristiano Ronaldo

Las Vegas police have reopened the sexual assault case involving Cristiano Ronaldo after Kathryn Mayorga filed a lawsuit against the Juventus star player and provided the German magazine Der Spiegel with details of her alleged attack at the Palms Hotel and Casino on June 13, 2009, USA Today reports. Mayorga claims she was paid $375,000 to keep quiet about the incident as part of a settlement made out of court. She has decided to go public now with her ordeal because her new lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, believes the non-disclosure agreement isn't legally binding.

"The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call of a sexual assault on June 13, 2009," the Las Vegas PD said in a statement obtained by Sports Illustrated. "At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description. A medical exam was conducted."

Mayorga not only reported the alleged assault on the same day that the incident allegedly took place, she also did an examination for sexual abuse at a local hospital. Since she didn't want to press charges, the rape kit was never processed. However, it still remains in the possession of the department. Ronaldo responded to these allegations by calling them "fake news" while on Instagram Live.

Stovall issued a statement in response to Cristiano's "fake news" assertion. "I have been asked to comment on the recent statement by Cristiano Ronaldo that Ms. Mayorga’s claims are 'fake news,'" Stovall said in the statement, perUSA Today. "Ms. Mayorga’s filed complaint, the physical evidence of her sexual assault, answers to written questions regarding the sexual assault attributed to Cristiano Ronaldo, the communications and conduct of the ‘team’ representing Cristiano Ronaldo, the circumstances surrounding the purported agreement for settlement and non disclosure, and the psychological injuries suffered by Ms. Mayorga are not 'fake news.'"
