The rumored trade between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers involving Kevin Love isn't official yet, but it may have hit its first roadblock. According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Mark Stein, if the league comes to find out that Love has already agreed to sign an extension with the Cavaliers prior to Aug. 23, which is when Andrew Wiggins is eligible to be dealt following the 30-day window of signing his rookie contract, the trade could be blocked and both parties could be hit with some huge penalties. LeBron James and Love have reportedly talked about teaming up together beyond next season, however, those type of discussions aren't considered illegal by the NBA. The Cavs, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.
As you may recall, the league suspended Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and former general manager Kevin McHale, as well as taking away four first-rounders and slapping the team with a $3.5 million fine in 2000 after it was discovered that the franchise promised Joe Smith a huge future contract in writing.
Both sides, especially the T'Wolves, should be smart enough to not let something like this happen again. However, if one of these teams do slip up, it may be a good thing that those Love fans didn't go through with burning their jerseys after all.
