In a match where he already says he has “a lot of regrets,” today Roger Federer lost in the fourth round of the French Open to 18th-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in five sets (6-7 [5], 7-6 [3], 6-2, 4-6, 6-3). This was Federer’s earliest defeat at Roland Garros since 2004, when he fell in the third round to Gustavo Kuerton.

The loss will only continue to fuel speculation that Federer is nearing the end of his career, or at least the part where he contends for major titles. He has now failed to reach the quarterfinals in three of the last four majors.

At 32 years old, Federer is at an age where most tennis players are at or close to retirement. While he is obviously not like most players, this all-time legend appears to finally be slowing down.
