It's not often that we get to feature a golfer on one of our "10 Sports People Who Had a Worse Week Than You" lists. Reason being, there aren't all that many golfers that we actually pay attention to at this particular time. But Dustin Johnson is one guy that we happen to keep tabs on, because he's dating Wayne Gretzky's daughter Paulina and…well, that's about it. Sure, he's got a handful of PGA Tour wins and is a pretty solid player. But his love life is why he's on our radar.
On Friday, he landed on our radar for a much, much different reason, though. He landed there because he failed his third—yes, third!—drug test by testing positive for cocaine and was subsequently suspended by the PGA for six months. So even though he's dating one of the most beautiful women in the country right now, last week pretty much sucked for him due to the "leave of absence" that he's being forced to take.
No other golfers had weeks that were quite that bad. But there are plenty of other sports-related people who can probably relate to how Johnson is feeling right now. From an ESPN personality who got suspended for a week to a musician who was the victim of a lethal crossover on the basketball court, these are the 10 Sports People Who Had a Worse Week Than You.
2.Stephen A. Smith
Date: 7/29/2014
Stephen A. appeared on this list last Sunday after he made some controversial comments about domestic violence. But things didn't get a whole lot better for him in the days following that appearance. In fact, last week saw him get suspended for what he said on ESPN First Take and saw him face further ridicule on the Internet as a result of his comments. He won't be back on the air until next Wednesday.
3.Blake Griffin
Date: 7/29/2014
Griffin was supposed to play a big part in the success of Team USA at the 2014 FIBA World Cup this month. But last week, he had to remove himself from the team because of a small fracture in his back. Hopefully his injury isn't too serious. But the words "fracture" and "back" definitely aren't encouraging if you're a Clippers fan. Let's hope he makes a speedy recovery.
4.Teyana Taylor
Date: 7/28/2014
On a normal week, Teyana Taylor has absolutely nothing to do with the world of sports. But this week, she got thrust into the sports spotlight when she came thisclose to falling as a result of a crossover at an event for the Jordan XX9 sneaker. She should stop trying to play D and stick to singing from now on.
5.Jameis Winston
Date: 7/30/2014
Are there going to be any positive headlines about the reigning Heisman Trophy winner this offseason? It sure doesn't feel like it. Winston has already faced his fair share of negative publicity over the course of the last six months and, last week, yet another piece of bad news came out. According to a report, the Florida State quarterback was handcuffed at gunpoint back in 2012 after someone saw him and one of his teammates running around near the FSU campus with a pellet gun. Fortunately, this incident will have very little effect on Winston now. But this guy continues to make himself look worse and worse as the weeks go on.
6.Dustin Johnson
Date: 8/1/2014
It was surprising to hear that Johnson—who is dating Paulina Gretzky (have we already mentioned that?!)—was suspended by the PGA last week for six months following a positive drug test for cocaine. Even more surprising: The fact that it was his third failed drug test overall. It sounds like he might need some help before this turns into an even bigger problem for him.
7.Lionel Messi
Date: 7/28/2014
Messi is still riding high off the success he enjoyed at the 2014 World Cup. But last week, a Spanish court put a little bit of a damper on his summer when it revealed that Messi will face prosecution for tax evasion in the near future. According to the court, Messi may have been privy to the fact that his father was creating businesses in his name in order to lower the amount of money that he pays for taxes every year. And if the court can prove that that's true, Messi could be in big trouble.
8.Zach Hocker
Date: 7/30/2014
Rather than perform a skit for his veteran teammates, the Redskins kicker agreed to let them give him a bad haircut. And while he didn't mind it in the moment, he regretted it the following morning when he got up and looked at himself in the mirror. "I wish I had thought of something funny [to perform]," he said. "I didn't anticipate this." Don't worry, dude. It'll grow back. Er, by next summer.
9.Joe Riggs
Date: 7/28/2014
After leaving the UFC back in 2006 to pursue other opportunities, Riggs announced that he was going to make his return to the Octagon this September during a fight against Paulo Thiago. However, last Monday, Riggs accidentally shot himself while cleaning a firearm that he owns and suffered injuries to his hand and upper thigh. He will now be forced to miss his fight with Thiago, and his UFC comeback will be delayed.
10.Paul George
Date: 8/1/2014
During Team USA's scrimmage on Friday night, the Pacers star sustained a leg injury that can only be described as "horrific." It was so bad that, quite frankly, we haven't been able to look at any replays of it and it will likely go down as one of the worst sports-related injuries of all time. Prayers up for PG.
11.Richard Sherman
Date: 7/30/2014
The Seahawks cornerback can say he's not mad about Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson becoming the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL last week. But come on, does anyone actually believe him? Deep down, Sherman is pissed about Peterson getting paid more than him—and truthfully, we don't blame him one bit. If you thought the Twitter war Sherman and Peterson were involved in last week was bad, just wait until you see what they have to say to one another throughout the NFL season.
