David Ortiz Shot in Dominican Republic (UPDATE)

Ortiz is currently hospitalized.

UPDATED 06/10/19 10:04 a.m. ET: David Ortiz is currently "out of danger" after being shot at point-blank range, according to police. His assistant, Leo Lopez, told ESPN that he had his gallbladder and parts of his intestines removed as a result. Ortiz suffered liver damage as well.

Cops have identified Eddy Feliz Garcia as a suspect in the shooting. ESPN reports that the 25-year-old was captured and beaten by a crowd at the bar shortly after, suffering a cranium contusion and trauma to his thorax and his legs. Police still haven't worked out a motive.

ESPN has learned that former Boston Red Sox star slugger David Ortiz was shot at a club in the Dominican Republic. He has been taken to a local hospital. Early reports suggested it was a burglary attempt.

Longtime Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was shot in a burglary attempt in the Dominican Republic, as @dsoldevila reported. Ortiz’s father told @Enrique_Rojas1 that the 43-year-old is headed to the hospital. A @CDN37 report says Ortiz suffered the gunshot wound in the leg.

Ortiz was reportedly shot in the back. A suspect has been arrested. Ortiz is said to be in stable condition.

Ortiz reportedly asked the doctor who was operating on him to not let him die because he is a "good man."
