Joey "Jaws" Chestnut set a new world record at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, proving that his only competition is the person staring back at him in the mirror. Chestnut won his 11th title in the last 12 years, and established a new personal best after demolishing 74 dogs.
Back in 2016, Chestnut put away 70 hot dogs. The following year, Chestnut surpassed his old mark by consuming 72 dogs in 10 minutes. His new record came with a bit of suspense when judges originally counted that he ate 64 hot dogs, barely edging out his closest competitor, Carmen Cincotti, who finished with 63. Then, it was discovered that a counter didn't count another plate which propelled Jaws' final tally to a record 74.
While Chestnut earned the $10,000 grand prize for his victory, it did come at a cost in the form of his health.
In the women's contest, Miki Sudo successfully defended her crown for a fifth year in a row, downing 37 dogs in a 10-minute span.
