Conor McGregor lost his much-ballyhooed boxing match against Floyd Mayweather courtesy of a tenth-round TKO Saturday night, but it wasn’t apparent judging from the way the self-proclaimed “Notorious One” celebrated after the bout. Despite getting his chin touched up with a flurry of late punches, are there really any losers in a fight that guarantees a $100 million purse to the winner and a consolatory $30 million to the loser?
Suffice it to say, the turn up was real for McGregor. The mixed martial arts fighter-turned boxer popped up at an official after party at Encore Beach Club on the Las Vegas Strip.
Given the fight itself consisted of one man with a history of domestic violence charges versus another accused of casual, performative racism, this was about as close to a silver lining as viewers could hope for.
Attendees who reportedly paid between $25 and $75 just to enter the venue didn’t seem deterred, as selfies and fan videos quickly hit the web.
McGregor reportedly made his appearance at approximately 3:00 a.m. draped in an Irish flag. He was seen entertaining some of the fans who came from overseas to see him and also caught on camera bopping to “Hypnotize” and “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems” by Notorious B.I.G.
“Thank you all so, so much,” McGregor said, while addressing the crowd. “I mean that sincerely from the very bottom of my heart.”
As for the L he took, McGregor said, “It didn’t go our way.”
Prior to the fight, TMZ reported venues were offering Mayweather anywhere between $30,000 and $100,000 for a 30-minute post-fight walkthrough. Since Mayweather opted to limit his only after-fight party to his own strip club, Girls Collection, that presumably left McGregor as the sole beneficiary of the club fee appearances.
By pretty much any metric, Saturday’s loss was a financial gain for McGregor, and his post-fight activities seemed to reflect it.
