Vintage Kobe Blows by Defender, Current Kobe Bricks Wide-Open Layup

Kobe Bryant botched an open layup in the Lakers' loss to the Pelicans Friday night, and the Pelicans honored Bryant before the game.

We’ve all been there: you’re in the open court in a pick-up game, with not one defender between you and the basket. It’s a sure thing. A gimme. Buckets. As you rise for the layup, the thought briefly floats through your mind: wait, what if I miss this…

The second you’ve entertained the notion of failure, that scenario has actualized itself: you’ve done the unthinkable and missed a wide-open layup. Tonight, we were reminded Kobe Bryant is a mere mortal, and the 37-year-old Kobe Bryant looks a lot more relatable than a younger Mamba.

During the Lakers’ 110-102 loss to the Pelicans Friday night, Kobe got defender Dante Cunningham off balance with a jab step (ah, that old jab step!) and blew past Cunningham, only to brick the left-handed layup.

Kobe finished with 14 points in 22 minutes. He has only three games remaining. The Lakers are back in action Sunday at 3:30 at Houston.

New Orleans honored Kobe with a touching tribute video featuring Kendrick Perkins, Ryan Anderson, and Anthony Davis before the game. Check it out below.
