Where will Welbz rank?

The Premier League looks a little different to the last time we saw it.

Before we were interrupted by the first international break of the new season, a final flurry of transfers on deadline day means that this weekend we could potentially see Anthony Martial, Kevin De Bruyne and even Joleon Lescott making eagerly awaited debuts for a new club.

On this one weekend, fans – fuelled by blind hope – are permitted to think that their deadline day panic buy will make all the difference. That can change pretty quickly if a player doesn't get off to a good start...just ask Fernando Torres.

In the spirit of positivity, here are the greatest Premier League debuts of all time.

Jürgen Klinsmann

Faustino Asprilla

Fixture: Middlesbrough 1 Newcastle United 2

Date: February 10th 1996

Falcao has serious competition to become the most popular Colombian striker of the Premier League era. Faustino Asprilla arrived on Tyneside in 1996 just as Kevin Keegan's Newcastle United were truly starting to embrace the tag of English football's 'entertainers'.

Asprilla arrived from Parma and made an instant impression, assisting a goal from the sub's bench as his new side came from behind to beat Middlesbrough in the second most important North East derby. Asprilla ended the year as the sixth best player in the world (according to FIFA) and wrote his name into Newcastle folklore with a Champions League hat-trick against Barcelona 18 months later.

Fabrizio Ravanelli

Fixture: Middlesbrough 3 Liverpool 3

Date: August 17th 1996

Ex-Juventus striker Fabrizio Ravanelli wasted no time in paying back his £7 million transfer fee by delivering an opening day hat-trick against Liverpool at Anfield. It was the second time Ravanelli – nicknamed the 'White Feather' because of his grey hair – had scored a hat-trick on a club debut, having performed the feat for Reggiana in Serie B.

Ravanelli spearheaded a footballing revolution on Teeside, which also saw the arrivals of Brazilian midfielders Emerson and Juninho. Despite reaching both the League Cup and FA Cup finals, Middlesbrough were relegated that same season as a result of a controversial three point deduction from the Premier League.

Alan Smith

Fixture: Liverpool 1 Leeds United 3

Date: November 14th 1998

It's hard to remember a time when Alan Smith was one of the hottest young strikers in the English game (but believe us, it happened). On his debut for boyhood club Leeds United, Alan Smith scored with his very first touch to help David O'Leary's men to a 3-1 win over Liverpool.

The rest of Alan Smith's career wasn't such fairytale stuff. Since leaving Leeds after the club suffered relegation in 2004, Smith has scored just nine league goals and now resides at Notts County as a player/coach.

Robbie Keane

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Fixture: Manchester United 3 Fulham 2

Date: August 19th 2001

Ruud van Nistelrooy had waited a long time for his Premier League debut. After agreeing an £18.5m move to Old Trafford in 2000, the dream move was postponed due to concerns over a persistent knee injury. One year later, with a series of games behind him for PSV, he made the move to Man United signing a five-year deal.

It didn't take him long to get to grips with English football, scoring two goals on his league debut in a 3-2 win over Fulham. The game showed the best of van Nistelrooy's predatory instincts, which led the dutchman to score 95 league goals in just 150 league games at Old Trafford. He left United under a cloud in 2006, just weeks after a training ground fight with the club's crown jewel, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fixture: Tottenham Hotspur 2 Arsenal 1

Date: April 14th 2010

Danny Rose hit a goal of the season contender on his Tottenham debut, which gave the club their first win over Arsenal in a North London derby for over ten years.

Arsenal's goalkeeper Manuel Almunia punched out a corner, only to find an onrushing Danny Rose, who thumped the ball into the roof of the net from over thirty yards. The win boosted Spurs' hopes of reaching the Champions League for the first time and all but ended Arsenal's title dreams.
