Rory McIlory and Caroline Wozniacki were bound to get back to their winning ways eventually, but their timing today was something else. A little less than two months after McIlroy unexpectedly called off his engagement to Wozniacki over the phone, each athlete seized their first title since the break-up.

McIlory had struggled in two tournaments prior to the Open Championship, finishing 15th at the Memorial Tournament, and 23rd at the US Open. Wozniacki's slide from the world's No. 1 rank has been more profound, but she had slid outside of the Top 10 before she began seeing McIlory. Her last Grand Slam final was at the 2009 U.S. Open, and she hadn't won a WTA event since last October. Wozniacki had to play in the French Open immediately after McIlory's ill-fated phone call, and was swept out of the first round (with great empathy, of course).

With time continuing to heal their personal lives, their professional flourish has kicked up. McIlory's 2014 Open Championship title was his third career major, and Wozniacki's Istanbul Cup win has seen her capture at least one WTA championship every year since 2008. It's a cute coincidence that each happened today.

While we've come to expect elite play from McIlory by now, seeing Wozniacki handedly capture her first championship in nine months could be the win that begins her climb up from her current No. 15 ranking.
