The Legend of Lionel Messi continues to build as the 25-year-old Argentine was awarded the FIFA Baloon d’Or (FIFA’s award for Player of the Year) for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time.
Messi, who had dominated the international soccer scene in recent years, is coming off arguably the best season of his career so far, as he finished 2012 by scoring a record-breaking 91 goals (a record previously held by Gerd Muller, who scored 85 goals in a calendar year in 1972).
“It’s really nice to win it again, for a fourth consecutive time. I'm really very happy. The fact is I enjoy the things that happen to me, the awards I’ve won, and I hope I can now go on and win more titles with my club and my national team.”
Spain’s Cristiano was the runner-up, with Messi’s FC Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta finishing third in the voting.
