To start the new season, the hot topic in the NFL has been players using their platform to protest the police killings of unarmed black men. Some are taking a knee during the national anthem, some are raising fists and others are locking arms. Washington wide receiver DeSean Jackson is making a similar statement with his footwear.
With the help of Marcus Rivero, aka SolesbySir, Jackson is wearing a pair of custom cleats today wrapped in graphic caution tape as a form of protest. In a statement released by Jackson, he said he hopes to “be part of a solution and start dialogue about the senseless killings of both citizens and police.”
Washington showed support for both Jackson and the law enforcement community in a statement of their own.
Jackson is wearing the cleats during pre-game warmups and says he may even leave them on for the game. The move would almost surely draw a fine from the league, but it appears that Jackson has bigger issues on his mind.
