We’re two weeks away from the premiere of the three-part Netflix docuseries jeen-yuhs which will chronicle the life and times of the prolific artist formerly known as Kanye West. The archival footage utilized will take fans back to the early 2000s, and the directing team isn’t too worried about gaining Ye’s publicly-sought approval on their final cut.
Directors Chike Ozah and Coodie Simmons revealed toRolling Stone that they had no idea Ye would want final say on the jeen-yuhs docuseries before it debuted, but they don’t really care regardless.
“Me and Chike have a company called Creative Control,” Coodie explained. “Because you don’t want to lose your creative control.”
Chike added that the two expected as much from Yeezy, given his controversial character and unique personality.
“If Kanye wasn’t as polarizing of a character as he was, we wouldn’t have an interesting doc,” Chike said. “This just comes with the territory. This is Kanye’s personality, so you just embrace it and then it’s going to take us, take us wherever it takes us. … This is the person that we’re dealing with. We all know what we’re dealing with.”
Last month West took to Instagram, where he demanded final approval of jeen-yuhs as a continued effort to “be in charge of my own image.”
“I’m going to say this kindly for the last time,” Ye captioned the post. “I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix. Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image. Thank you in advance.”
Coodie encountered Ye on Feb. 1, with RS writing West “didn’t even mention his week-old Instagram post.”
“I asked him, did he watch the film? And he said, ‘I have a process,’” Coodie shared. “I said. ‘That’s great that you got your process.’ And we just talked as brothers from that point.”
The first part of jeen-yuhs begins streaming on Netflix on Feb. 16.
