Papers, Please creator Lucas Pope's next project is likely to be a complete departure from the bleak Eastern European state of Arstotzka. In a recent inteview with Edge, Pope said that despite the critical explosion over Papers, Please's overwhelming pathos – not only did approve or turn away immigrants to the economically and politically unstable country, but you also had to perform well enough as an immigration official to stretch your meager wages far enough to support your extended family in wretched living conditions – he thinks of gameplay first and foremost.

"It’s always about the game first,” Pope said in the interview. “It’s always about a piece of interactive entertainment. It’s about which mechanics I think are good. I think whatever I do next, it’s always going to be kind of in service of that."

Pope also said that he didn't even intend for Papers, Please to join in the current trend of other empathetic indie games like Cart Life and I Get This Call Everyday – nor will his follow-up continue in that direction.

"“[It will be] something completely different, not even related at all to Papers, Please,” he said. “I don’t know if people are going to be happy about that or not.”

Like Papers, Please, Pope will be developing his next game solo. Whatever form that may take remains to be seen. Read the rest of the interview at the link below.
