Black Panther broke box office records, so it’s likely you’ve seen it at least once. What you may not have noticed, however, is that The Daily Show host Trevor Noah had a somewhat hidden cameo in the movie.
If you recall Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross character, he eventually takes control of a Wakandan spaceship to help Wakandan's defend their country from Michael B. Jordan’s Eric Killmonger. Naturally, the ship has an onboard computer called Griot—which, as you can tell from the clip above, is voiced by Noah.
During an off-air moment of a February episode of TheDaily Show, the South African comedian expressed how great it felt to watch the film and see the real-world effects it had on people.
“And it was extra special for me because people speak Xhosa in the movie,” he said. “So, there were subtitles and I was like, ‘Don’t need your subtitles.’ I don’t need your subtitles. Get rid of the subtitles! This is just for me right now. Nobody else listen. This reminds me of my mom.’”
As for the online detective work, we have Redditor ottercorrect to thank for bringing this to our unobservant attention, and, in case you’re still in complete disbelief, user jmeng0329 for posting an unaltered screenshot of the film’s credits.
Marvel movies are made for fans and people like this—from Trevor Noah, who got to be part of the Black Panther experience and lend his proud South African identity to the afro-centric film, to the fans who live and breathe this stuff and locate little nuances for the rest of us.
