A man believed to be responsible for two shootings in Copenhagen was killed by police this morning, authorities say.
The Associated Press reports that police confronted the man when he returned to a location they had been monitoring. This was after he allegedly shot three people at a synagogue around 1 a.m. Dan Uzan, 37, was killed after being shot in the head. The man escaped on foot, prompting the search.
Just hours prior, shots were fired at a free speech event organized by artist Lars Vilks at the Krudttoenden cafe. A 40-year-old man was killed, and three police officers were injured.
According to the Associated Press, the gunman has yet to be identified. Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt released a statement today declaring the shootings acts of terrorism:
Denmark has been hit by terror, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said on Sunday. We do not know the motive for the alleged perpetrator's actions, but we know that there are forces that want to hurt Denmark. They want to rebuke our freedom of speech.
