If you get busted with weed at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, authorities will take your weed, but there probably won't be any legal consequences.
According to the Denver Post, TSAconfiscated 36 ounces of weed-infused snacks from a traveler's luggage earlier this week. The case was passed along to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office, which refused to press charges because marijuana is now legal under state law. However, sheriff's spokesman Brad Gibson said that passenger's are at the mercy of federal law once they're in the air.
Though the feds don't plan to take legal action, the incident has revealed a blurred line where county authority over the airport ends and federal power starts. However, as Aspen attorney Lauren Maytin told the Post, the reasons federal agencies aren't pressed about cases like this is because they're a waste of time.
"Unless you're talking about major poundage, they're turning it over to the local authorities, and the locals are saying, 'It's legal'" she explained. There are definitely more pressing matters.
