Ray Nagin, former mayor of New Orleans, was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for charges including money laundering, bribery and corruption.
Nagin, 58, was convicted in February after accepting over $160,000 worth of bribes in the form of cash, vacations and free materials for his family's construction business in exchange for work from the city. According to the Associated Press, Nagin—who servd as the city's mayor from 2002 to 2010—vehemently denid any wrongdoing following his 2013 indictment.
The Associated Press adds that Nagin thanked Judge Helen Berrigan for her professionalism, and said" I trust that God's going to work all this out" prior to his sentencing. He will begin his sentence at a federal prison in Oakdale, La. in September.
