Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett has hinted that a spinoff of the acclaimed drama could very well be in the works. Better yet, it would focus on Jasmine Jobson’s widely loved character, Jaq.

In an interview with BBC 5Live’s Nihal Arthanayake on Tuesday, Jan. 30, Bennett explained that he has been having conversations with Netflix and production company Cowboy about what a potential spinoff might look like. He also mentioned that executive producer Drake is open to the idea too. Elaborating on the format that might take, Bennett also mentioned that there had been conversations about whether the Jaq spinoff would be a prequel, Top Boy movie or even a stage musical.

“We are talking to Netflix about a spinoff, which will be around Jaq,” said Bennett. “I think that the world that we created is so rich, it’s so deep, and it has that fanatical following that it’s something that still has life in it. Some shows reach their end, and you kind of go, ‘Thank god they’ve ended. I love that show, but they’ve run out of steam.’ But I do feel that there’s more juice to squeeze from Top Boy.”

So far, they’re tentative, early conversations and it doesn’t sound as if anything at all is set in stone yet. Bennett remained cautious when speaking about the project, commenting, “I’ve learned through bitter experience not to talk too much about shows that are in the future. You just never know if they’re going to get made. And in fact, most shows that are developed actually don’t get made. You can write the script and, for whatever reason, they don’t get made. So you end up looking like a bit of a fool for mentioning it. But I have hopes that this will work.”
