Not only has hip-hop (and, in turn, the world) not forgotten about Dre, they most certainly haven't forgotten about the iconic call for resistance that surrounded the rise and continued dominance of N.W.A. The cultural importance of the pioneering group is the chief cinematic territory of Straight Outta Compton, the much-anticipated biopic from director F. Gary Gray. As your Apple Music listening habits have already confirmed, the film's soundtrack accompaniment was well worth the hype.
Our own Speedy Morman sat down with members of the Compton cast—including O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube), Jason Mitchell (Eazy E), and Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre)—to discuss the film's impact on the continuation of the N.W.A. legacy. "To have people around you, taking that emotional ride with you, that's everything that the audience is living for," says Mitchell. "That satisfaction, seeing tears come down people's faces, that's incredible." The cast also discusses the newfound fame that their high-profile roles have given them, expressing both hesitance and appreciation at its potential impact on their futures.
